Did you know that our bodies contain over 100 trillion bacteria? We have ten times more bacteria than human cells, and a good majority of this bacteria accumulates in your gut (the gut microbiome), which play a significant role in our health and longevity.
What does the gut microbiome affect?
Our gut microbiome affects how we process emotional information. It has been shown that a good diet including probiotics and prebiotics that help balance our healthy bacteria has significant positive effects on our mental wellbeing.
Probiotics work to replenish the beneficial bacteria in our body and provide a myriad of important, supportive health benefits. Your digestive tract houses a diverse variety of bacteria, yeasts and viruses that benefit you when in balance, or cause inflammation and disease when a few strains are allowed to take over.
These microbes contain both healthy and unhealthy bacteria. Having healthy bacteria is what keeps the unhealthy bacteria in check. Probiotics are supplements that contain live healthy bacteria, and supplementing with probiotics help to maintain and balance out the bacteria.
Probiotics and Gut Health
When we have an imbalance in the gut bacteria, it’s called dysbiosis. We can experience inflammation, food sensitivities, obesity, eczema, autoimmune disorders, malabsorption and gastrointestinal disorders. Dysbiosis can cause leaks in the gut lining through which substances such as food particles, pathogens and toxins can leak into the bloodstream. When these substances leak into the bloodstream our body will attack them, which triggers inflammation. This is why inflammation begins in the gut.
Supplementing with Probiotics
Taking a probiotic supplement will help with your gut health. At Dose & Co we are proud to have an added probiotic in our protein powder. We use Ganeden BC30, which is one of the only probiotic strains that can survive in foods. This is due to its unique structure that safeguards the cell’s genetic material from manufacturing processes, shelf-life and stomach acids. This means that this probiotic won’t be destroyed before consuming it or destroyed after consuming it so it can do its job in the gut.
Further Reading on Ganeden BC30
There are over 25 published studies on Ganeden BC30 to show how it supports immune health, digestive health and the absorption of protein.
One study found that the presence of Ganeden BC30 both increased plant protein digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract, and promoted a healthier environment in the colon. According to the study the authors found that BC30 is the only Bacillus coagulans strain that has been shown to have an effect on protein utilisation. This means that if you are taking a pea protein combined with this specific probiotic, it will improve the digestion of the protein which is a huge benefit.
A second study was conducted on 29 men that were assigned to take Ganeden BC30 whilst training everyday for two weeks to measure athletic performance and muscle damage. The results provided evidence that Ganeden BC30 supplementation combined with protein reduced muscle damage and improved muscle recovery.
Research on Ganeden BC30 has found that the probiotic does a lot to keep your digestive system functioning well, reduces bloating, gas and abdominal pain. In addition, it helps people digest food better and support immune function. For more studies or more information on Ganeden BC30, check out their website.
